DANCE
Acclaimed dancer and choreographer Bill T. Jones and I believe that dance is important for all people, especially children. Children need to know that their bodies are wonderful instruments that can bring joy to themselves and to others.
FROM WALL TO WALL
Walls are all around us -- historic to modern, functional to beautiful, physical to emotional. From the Great Wall of China to the painted Lascaux caves in France, walls do more than just hold up ceilings. They define spaces and keep things in and out. They are canvases for art, information, and so much more.
HOOPS WITH SWOOPES
Sheryl Swoopes plays basketball. She shoots, jumps, dribbles, catches, and scores. "The fundamentals are a very important part of the game," she says. "It shows my stengths and my weaknesses. I'm never satisfied with just winning. I can always improve something. I can become a better player -- I can become a better person. This takes practice.
"The most important thing of all is to enjoy what you do and believe in yourself. As long as you believe in yourself, anything is possible."
THE HARLEM NUTCRACKER
This beloved modern ballet celebrates African American culture, history, and family.
HOW MY FAMILY LIVES IN AMERICA
Sanu is learning how to braid her hair and cook the same African meal her father makes. Eric loves to play baseball and dance the merengue with his friends and family. April works hard on her Chinese writing and tries to keep up with her family's challenging games.
This book provokes readers to examine their own families -- what makes them the same, what makes them distinct, and how this uniqueness is celebrated.
Meet Samu, Eric and April.
FIGHTING FIRES
An excerpt:
"The truckies chop at walls and ceilings with axes and crowbars to get to the fire. The pumper uses a Handie-Talkie to tell the chauffer to turn on the water.
WHOOOOOSH! Water shoots out of the line, and the line and the outside vent man gets to work."
FIGHTING FIRES is an inside look at the special jobs fire fighters do.
