Fighting Fires

The truckies chop at walls and ceilings with axes and crowbars to get to the fire. The pumper crew pulls the line into the building. The officer of the pumper uses a Handie-Talkie to tell the chauffer to turn on the water.
WHOOOOOSH water shoots out of the line, and the outside vent man gets to work.

It was an honor and priviledge to spend time with the brave women and men of the New York City fire department. I was fascinated by just how much preparation they do to keep us -- and themselves -- safe. Now, more then ever, it is important we learn more about their work, tip our hats, and say, "thank you."

Ingram:
Always a hot topic for the very young, fire fighters take center stage in this action-packed, photo-essay. From the first clang of a truck pulling out of the station to the careful cleanup after the blaze is extinguished, this behind-the-scenes tour covers the vehicles, the equipment, and all the hard work involved in fire fighting. Tips on fire safety are also included. "A good resource for primary grade classrooms studying community helpers and for preschool fire engine buffs".--"Booklist
